Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, 1918-1923, Post #1

This post will be dedicated to Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (when it was called that). We have a photo book from our great-grandfather, Benjamin Zupp, full of photos from his time there. Photos are around the years of 1919-1923. He entered the college after graduating high school and graduated from the college in 1923. After that, he taught for four years at the college (was an assistant in Veterinary Medicine). Most photos appear to be when he was a student- pre-1923. We will be adding photos and a graduation book from 1923 as we scan them in- it will probably be a couple months out before we finish the entire book (yes, that many photos), so check back. Here's to hoping we can identify more than a couple people (some of the photos have names). Entire years from photos can ranger from 1918-1926.

The photo above it the cover of the book his photos were in.

1) We estimate this photo to be around 1919 due to our relative's age. The only person we know is Benjamin Zupp, who is five over from left in second row-light hair and light jacket.

2) We think this is Benjamin Zupp's class of 1922, as there are too many people for it to be the graduating class and they are not in their graduation gowns (Veterinary Medicine- there were 19 people who were in his graduating class of 1923. He is seven over from left in second row- dark hair, white shirt with tie). If you go four over from him to the right, you will see Frederick Douglass Patterson. I am still working on identifying the others.

3) All we know is this is the Mulligan Club with the date 12/6/1921. No names listed on the photo.

4) Ben Zupp fourth in from left, back row, others unknown at this time

5) Ben Zupp, second in front right, others unknown at this time

6) Ben Zupp, third in front right, others unknown at this time

These were in the front of his photobook- 3 pages. We've done the best we can to transcribe parts of them, but we may be off on names.

21) D. H. Summers. Another photo will be scanned in that was labeled with this name but it's towards the end of the book so it will be a while out still.

22) Dr. Emerson, possibly misspelled and should be Dr. Emmerson from other documents I have found online. Another photo will be posted that was labeled with this name but will be a while out as it is near the back of the book.

26) Group photo, Ben is 5 in from left on second row, I believe (pretty positive) Frederick Douglass Patterson is in the back row on the left. This is likely either Spring 1922, Fall 1922, or 1921 or before. There is a photo of Ben with his family and this hat from July 1922 taken at his home in MN. After 1922, there are no photos of him wearing this hat.

28) This is very likely from 1919 due to how young Ben looks in the photo.

29) Dr. D.H. Summers (right) and Dr. Elmer Brockmeier (left)
